My Mouth is for Salt
by Stacey Lee Gee
Poetry

In the high desert of Wonder Valley, where the vibrating pulse of bombs from the neighboring marine base shake the ground each morning, a woman licks the salt from a tamarisk tree and refuses to quench her thirst. My Mouth is for Salt is a sequence of poems and photographs written over one blistering desert summer — a record of the body meeting a landscape that most people call uninhabitable. Ravens watch her bathe. A coyote digs under the fence at night. The wind removes every trace of moisture and leaves haunting sounds as it blows. Artist Stacey Lee Gee approaches language in the same way she approaches material: with urgency, ritual, and a willingness to be transformed. Tarot cards, field recordings, sweet bread rising in a hot kitchen, and the long shadow of a self cast on sand. These poems are about desire and the strange comfort of becoming part of the environment you inhabit.
